Voice Over IP
How does this apply to me and my business?

Voice over IP or “Voip” can mean different things to different people.  There are two basic perspectives on voice over IP, IP Telephony and Voip. Most consumers recognize Voip from television commercials in which service providers offer free long distance and many other benefits by subscribing to a service plan.  Many business professionals think of Voip as being an IP telephone on their desk or IP softphone application on their PC that lets them log into their corporate telephone system remotely and take calls while sitting at the local coffee shop or at home.

IP Telephony

IP Telephony introduces packetized voice to your local area IP network, thereby making telephones additional nodes on the LAN. In an IP Telephony environment all calls within the network are considered VOIP because it is in fact routing voice over internet protocol, but as soon as an outbound call leaves the local area network, it commonly goes over the standard PSTN carrier services via traditional analog POTS or ISDN circuits. There are many advantages to be gained by IP Telephony, E-TEL Systems Corporation can guide you through the requirements and considerations to determine if IP Telephony is a good fit for your organization.

VOIP

VOIP is sending calls off of your network via the internet with a carrier service that has an interface with the PSTN (publicly switched telephone network) that can route calls to a traditional POTS circuit. Many of us have seen ads on television for these carriers. A tremendous advantage of VOIP as it relates to today’s business environment is the ability to “link” two telephone systems in geographically dissimilar locations together via WAN (T1 or virtual private network) connection to appear as one logical network, thus allowing station to station dialing between locations and centralization of common services such as voicemail or call accounting.
